As part of the International Liver Congress (ILC) 2021, the EASL Takeaways take a look at key topics from the congress, with leading experts discussing the most impactful science and putting it into perspective. This session, presented by Professors Maria Buti, Shira Zelber-Sagi and Antonio Craxì, explores prominent themes from ILC 2021 on the topic of public health.

Professor Zelber-Sagi takes the panel through the importance of public health policies in tackling obesity, particularly in populations with low socioeconomic status. They examine the associations between food insecurity and all-cause mortality in adults with liver disease, between parental pre-pregnancy BMI and offspring NAFLD, and between obesity and loss to follow-up in cirrhotic populations. The panel then reviews the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on liver care, as well as the effect of liver disease on COVID-19 mortality. Finally, Professor Craxì discusses residual mortality in HBV carriers and the effects of HBV vaccines on liver cancer prevention.

Biographies

Antonio Craxi Antonio Craxì is Professor of Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine at the University of Palermo, Italy. He is also member of several professional societies including the European, International, and American Associations for the Study of Liver Disease. Prof Craxì’s main research interests include hepatitis C and B, antiviral therapy, NAFLD, hepatocellular carcinoma, iron overload states, autoimmune liver diseases and inflammatory bowel diseases.
Maria Buti Maria Buti is EU Policy Councillor from January 2020. She is a Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Internal Medicine and Hepatology Department at Hospital General Universitari Valle Hebron, Barcelona. Professor Buti’s main area of interest and expertise is viral hepatitis with particular experience in diagnosis and therapy of hepatitis B and C.
Shira Zelber Professor Zelber-Sagi is the Dean at the School of Public Health, Faculty of Social Welfare and Health Sciences at the University of Hafia, Israel. She is a clinical dietitian, Epidemiologist and a researcher in nutritional epidemiology and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). She is a member of the EASL Policy and Public Health Committee and the United European Gastroenterology (UEG) Policy and Public Health Committee.
